THE MYTH OF MULTI-TASKING

Research confirms that there is no such thing as multi-tasking. Our brain works in a step by step manner and will perform one function after the next. So, when we are trying to do multiple things simultaneously, we are in fact exhausting our brain into performing very short quick transitions from one subject to another.

Do you feel utterly drained at the end of the day? It’s a sign that your attention was scattered.

Attention focused on the present is energy enhancing. When we are fully focused on one thing at a time, our energy rises. When we allow a pause in between activities, we direct the brain to closing one subject and preparing our being for the next.

Notice how if you are trying to talk to someone and they are looking at their phone, your enthusiasm for the conversation dwindles. More than that, the person actually checking the phone cannot possibly hear what you are saying. Try it consciously. Try using your phone while attempting to listen to someone. It is extremely taxing on the system.

In Montessori classrooms, children are encouraged to return their work to the shelf where they found it. And to roll the mat and place it back in the basket. These rituals are a way of closing one activity to prepare for the next.

In life, we must learn to do the same. Think how amazing it is when you are with someone who is present. It’s so satisfying. Compare that to being on the phone with someone as they prepare something to eat at the same time… Big difference, right? Full attention is a gift we offer in life. And since everything we do spirals right back to us. When we offer our full presence (as in, we’re not thinking about what we have to do next or anything in the past), life rewards us with energy and a general feeling of well-being.

Mindfulness is exactly that. And the practice of mindfulness whether through meditation, yoga or just an awake state that wants to stay present to the moment improves performance, elevates the energy and deepens all creativity.
