Let’s talk about integrity

I’ve been thinking about what I value most in people. I’m on a mission to narrow it down to three non-negotiables.

Integrity felt like an important one. Being a writer, I checked the dictionary for the full definition. And sure enough, integrity encompasses so many of the qualities that feel so important to my spirit.

The word integrity is used quite loosely these days. It’s all over mission statements and everywhere. So I started wondering ‘do people actually know what they’re saying when they allude to the principle?’

Integrity meaning

1. The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.

Synonyms: honesty, good character, ethics, decency, noble-mindedness, fairness, sincerity, truthfulness, trustworthiness.

2. The state of being whole and undivided.

Synonyms: unity, wholeness, coherence, togetherness.

Integrity represents total impeccability with our word. Basically, following through with what we say we are going to do. Notice how kids are super literal on this. When you say to a kid “we will do something” and then you don’t (without a truly reasonable amendment) they are shattered at a very deep level. This is because as kids, we are at our most authentic. And this is how important integrity is to our whole being.

It is also why, even subconsciously, we are all drawn to that quality one way or another. So this leads us to the second part of the definition: Integrity is our way of being whole. Being true to ourselves. Essentially, living our truth. Anytime we are feeling torn inside, it is because what we really want and what we are living are not in accord.

Here’s the trick for figuring out how in alignment you are. Look around and see who is in your world. What’s going on with them (good or bad) is also going on within you…
